Our Name - Bekal
We take our name from a small tourist town in North Kerala that hosts a massive well- preserved fort that appears to emerge from the sea.
It was built by Shivappa Nayaka of Keladi in 1650 AD. It is the largest fort in Kerala, spread over 40 acres. Standing at the centre of the fort is an observation tower, which offers beautiful views of the coastline and the towns of Kanhangad, Pallikkara, Bekal, Uduma.
We chose this name as a famous longstanding landmark of Kerala and nearby Mangalore while focused on bringing the cuisine of God’s own country to Bangalore. This area was the gateway to Kerala for so many visitors from various parts of the world. These visitors have
given Kerala numerous things that have built our heritage and culture. We attempt to recreate flavorful dishes in our restaurant using the spices, the vegetables and the recipes that Kerala and Mangalore are famous for.
An avid foodie and amateur home cook, Zach spent a successful lifetime working for various
companies in the petroleum and IT industry.He has travelled to many countries, experiencing
food and its manner of service to a variety of customers. On retirement from active service
with a view to serving quality Kerala food in Bangalore, he invested and committed resources
to a reputed restaurant named Bekal. The journey to a Kerala culinary service was laid years
back as a kid spending summer months in his grandmother’s kitchen in Kottayam and
Alleppey districts of Kerala.
MuraliKrishna is the Manager and the Main Chef of Bekal. He has had a lifetime spent in the
food industry starting as a teenager cleaner in his father’s restaurants. Gaining experience and
after stints in kitchens (where his true talent was discovered), he managed multiple restaurants.
He is passionate about serving tasty dishes and enjoys it most when customers lick up the last
bit from their plates. His origins from Ernakulam District and travels in Andhra, TN, and
Karnataka have flavored his output.
